How it works

Kaspersky antivirus proactive components in the product deliver protection from threats that have not yet been catalogued in signature databases. All processes launched in the system are analyzed to warn users of possible threats, roll back unwanted changes and restore damaged data. Files are scanned for malicious content the moment they are created, launched or changed.

The first time on-demand scanning is launched all objects are automatically scanned. However, for subsequent scans iSwift and iChecker technologies limit scanning to new and modified files only. During periods of increased user activity, the Kaspersky antivirus solution switches to background mode to reduce its demand on system resources, so that they can be used by more high-priority applications.

Scanning speed

In August 2008, the team at Virus Bulletin conducted a test on antivirus solutions which included scanning speed for programs and system files. Kaspersky Lab’s new product, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, was named the winner with a speed of 22.28 MB/sec. The details from the test results can be viewed in the figure.

On-demand antivirus scanning

Twice a year the renowned Austrian research laboratory AV-Comparatives analyzes the level of detection of on-demand scanning of anti-virus products. Based on the results, products are given one of the following classifications: Advanced +, Advanced, and Standard.

Since the very first time this test was conducted (in February 2004) Kaspersky Lab products have held the status of "Advanced +", an extraordinary result compared to the performances of other tested products.

Looking at the stats for on-demand scanning, it might seem that there is little difference between the level of protection offered by Kaspersky Lab solutions and the level of detection offered by other solutions. However, the antivirus solutions were tested using a collection that consisted of hundreds of thousands of malicious programs, which means that even a small difference in the outcome equals thousands of malicious programs that were missed by other antivirus products.
